Arrange a Speaker
Arrowsmith staff are available to speak on a variety of topics related to neuroscience, education and learning disabilities. Please contact us if you would like to discuss arranging for a speaker at one of your organization’s events.
The following is a list of some topics that we have recently spoken on:
- Connecting Neuroscience and Education
- Neuroplastic Effects of a Cognitive Program for Individuals with Learning Disabilities
- Understanding Dyslexia – A Cognitive Approach
- Understanding Auditory Processing – A Cognitive Approach
- Enriching Minds, Changing Lives
Speakers
The genesis of the Arrowsmith Program of cognitive exercises lies in Barbara Arrowsmith Young’s journey of discovery and innovation to overcome her own severe learning disabilities, a description of which appears in the article, Building a Better Brain or in Chapter 2 of the book, “The Brain That Changes Itself” by Dr. Norman Doidge. Diagnosed in grade one as having a mental block, which today would have been identified as multiple learning disabilities, she read and wrote everything backwards, had trouble processing concepts in language, continuously got lost and was physically uncoordinated. Barbara eventually learnt to read and write from left to right and mask a number of the symptoms of her learning disabilities through heroic effort, however she continued throughout her educational career to have difficulty with specific aspects of learning. Barbara Arrowsmith Young holds both a B.A.Sc. in Child Studies from the University of Guelph, and a Master’s degree in School Psychology from the University of Toronto (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education). After her undergraduate studies were completed Barbara worked as the Head Teacher in the lab preschool at the University of Guelph for two years where she began to observe learning differences in preschool children.

Tara Bonner has been with the Arrowsmith organization for almost 15 years. As first a teacher, then as School Principal and now an Advisor, Tara’s current role involves helping other organizations bring cognitive programming to their community. Prior to joining Arrowsmith, Tara taught in schools in Canada, UK, Mexico and Chile, where she saw dedicated teachers and advanced technology temporarily lessening the struggle of children with learning difficulties. She recognized that too often these students still faced a lifetime of poor performance, limited choices, and diminishing self esteem. With a background of psychology and education and well as transformative training in the application of a cognitive approach to learning, Tara feels privileged to be part of a movement designed to change lives and end the stigma and struggle of learning problems.

Aula Magna room
Carrer de la Immaculada, 22, 08017, Barcelona
Date: June 12, 2019
Time: 6:30pm (doors will open at 6:15pm)
In this presentation, Barbara will talk about her journey of discovery, the lines of research she combined, and the outcomes achieved over her 40 years as an educator and researcher. She will describe a number of learning disorders, from those that impact the learner in school to those that affect us in life. She will discuss ‘cognitive glitches’ – those areas of weakness that we are all familiar with and often explain away by saying, “I am just not good at navigating, recognizing faces, (fill in the blank).” She will discuss ‘cognitive mismatches’ – situations we find ourselves in where the demand of the task is incompatible with our cognitive functioning and the challenges this presents. Principles of neuroplasticity and the factors leading to both positive and negative brain change will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
An understanding of the principles that drive neuroplastic change
An understanding of how different cognitive functions impact learning and academic skill acquisition and social-emotional well-being
Looking at behaviour through a cognitive lens – how understanding the cognitive profile of an individual helps us understand their behaviour
An understanding of outcomes related to a capacity-based treatment approach to addressing specific learning disabilities

Auckland Writers & Readers Festival The Woman Who Changed Her Brain ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre Until recently, theories of neuroscience have posited that the brain can not be changed but the emerging field of neuroplasticity is challenging this view. In The Woman Who Changed Her Brain (2012), Canadian Barbara Arrowsmith Young reveals how she developed a series of innovative brain exercises to conquer her severe learning disabilities.
