The Cognitive Intensive Program

Arrowsmith School Toronto is now accepting applications for the Cognitive Intensive Program scheduled to run from July 6 through to August 14, 2020.  Both schools are also able to offer this 6-week Cognitive Intensive Program throughout the school year during any consecutive 6-week period that we are in session.

Arrowsmith School’s Cognitive Intensive Program will target the Symbol Relations cognitive function that processes and understands ideas. This is a very important cognitive function that is involved in processing concepts, understanding and quickly grasping what we read and hear, gaining insight, logical reasoning, seeing connections between ideas, cause and effect processing, and mathematical reasoning.

This cognitive function plays out in academic learning as well as in understanding our world. Individuals at all levels of functioning in this area can benefit from this program. Our experience has been that through targeting this cognitive function, we see positive changes in the individual’s ability to understand the world around them. Reports from parents and students who attended previous Cognitive Intensive Programs are documented in the video.

Norman Doidge, author of ‘The Brain That Changes Itself’ and ‘The Brain’s Way of Healing’, comments on the benefits of the Symbol Relations program:

“The Symbol Relations functions are ones that can be used to train people with any background language to develop higher order reasoning and processing abilities, a skill that has relevance across all academic disciplines. By virtue of having lived in Toronto, and immersed myself in the school, and referred many students and adults to training in this function, I can attest to how it enhances overall functioning and is a very wise choice for a cognitive function to train. This would have a major impact on improved educational functioning throughout the world.

The fact that they train the brain processors that make possible reasoning and rationality, is arguably one of the most important positive developments one could imagine for our world, with its complex problems.”
