After many years of struggling to find the right answer, it has been amazing and completely transformed his life, and by default, ours too. The realms of research created since this program started, showing the incredible results possible and there’s so much more to uncover. As well as where Covid fits into the mix, with neurological damage one of the findings gaining more and more attention since the beginning of the pandemic.

How to Rewire Your Brain with Barbara Arrowsmith-Young
Featured on I have ADHD Host: Kristen Carder

Barbara Arrowsmith-Young overheard her first-grade teacher telling her mom, “Barbara really isn’t going to amount to much.” Growing up, Barbara struggled to learn to read and write. Back then, there was no such term as “learning difficulty” — the understanding was that your brain was fixed forever. To Barbara, it felt like a life sentence. Today, she is known as “the woman who changed her brain.” After years of living with a diagnosed “mental block,” Barbara set out to understand why parts of her brain weren’t functioning the way they should. What she discovered changed her understanding of the brain entirely, and she knew it was her life’s work to help others overcome the learning difficulties that might be holding them back. The Arrowsmith Program is helping thousands of people worldwide reduce the factors in their life causing negative neuroplasticity so they can become effective, confident, and self-directed learners. The limitless possibilities of not knowing her diagnoses
Featured on Dare to Share your Untold Story with Salima Jadavji Host: Salima Jadavji

Barbara authentically shares what it was like growing up with severe learning difficulties, having no known diagnosis at the time. She was pressed to carve and navigate her own path through feeling that she couldn’t fit in, feeling that going to school was meant to ‘feel stupid’, feeling ashamed that she couldn’t learn what others could, that at times it got so emotionally and mentally unruly that she had to fake illness so she could get out of going to school. She never told a soul what she had experienced, endured, and suffered through for decades. Barbara presented with exceptional strengths, so it was easy to mask the true struggle. Barbara shares with vulnerability emotions that emerged — hopelessness and despair, questioning how she could be successful when she often found herself guessing the answers — at times she was right and other times she was not. She expresses that what she endures had no logic in her world, unable to decode language, whether it be in reading, writing or comprehension of verbal communication. Through perseverance, she worked her process and overcame her learning difficulties when she immersed herself into the science of neuroplasticity and created meaningful work, that is her life’s work today. Her key message to listeners is that: there are solutions; there is hope and optimism in every situation if you look, so test it out and challenge what you know; never give up; keep investigating, ask questions, get curious; there is no one size fits all answer.

This episode is the first part of an interview with Barbara Arrowsmith-Young. She is the creator of the Arrowsmith Program of cognitive exercises which came from her journey of discovery and innovation to overcome her own severe learning disabilities, a description of which appears in the article, her book, "The Woman Who Changed Her Brain" and in Chapter 2 of the book, “The Brain That Changes Itself” by Dr. Norman Doidge. Diagnosed in grade one as having a mental block, which today would have been identified as multiple learning disabilities, she read and wrote everything backwards, had trouble processing concepts in language, continuously got lost and was physically uncoordinated. Barbara eventually learnt to read and write from left to right and mask a number of the symptoms of her learning disabilities through heroic effort, however she continued throughout her educational career to have difficulty with specific aspects of learning.
