Part Time Programs – Toronto School
The Arrowsmith School Toronto Part Time Programs are ideally designed for students whose learning is impacted by only a few (one to three) learning dysfunctions, as well as for students who may not be able to enroll in the full time day program. It is useful to review our Description of Learning Dysfunctions to identify areas which you think relate to the student in question and to determine whether a part time program would be appropriate. Arrowsmith School Toronto recognizes that although a full-time program placement is the most efficient way to address these problems, for certain individuals this type of commitment is simply not possible. Given that each area of difficulty requires four hours of active engagement in the cognitive exercise per week, students enrolled in the Part Time Programs are only able to address up to two areas per year, if they are enrolled in both programs outlined below.
The two Part Time Programs offered by Arrowsmith School Toronto:
Tuesday and Thursday Program
The Tuesday and Thursday Program addresses one area of learning difficulty per year. Based on the student’s learning profile determined by the assessment, an individualized program will be designed to address one area. Each program has been designed to target a specific area of learning difficulty and each student’s program is tailored for that student’s particular needs.
There is no homework requirement for this program. All required work is completed within the Tuesday/Thursday sessions.
The Arrowsmith Assessment is required prior to participating in this program as the areas requiring work will be identified in the assessment process.
Motor Symbol Sequencing (Bi-Monthly Saturday) Program
The Bi-monthly Saturday Program only addresses the Motor Symbol Sequencing area.
A student with this difficulty will have some or all of the following problems:
- difficulty with the mechanical aspect of writing
- difficulty putting words on paper
- can speak better than can write
- messy handwriting and careless errors in spelling and math
- difficulty with forming letters and with motor planning in writing
For a more complete description of this problem, please refer to the Description of Learning Dysfunctions on our web site.
This program is offered with one hour of bi-monthly monitoring at the school facility to first train the student in the process of this program and then the student engages in a minimum of four hours of the program at home per week and returns to Arrowsmith School to have his/her progress monitored and for any necessary modifications to be made to the program.
The first two sessions are devoted to training the student and family member in the correct method of performing the exercises. At subsequent sessions, the student’s progress will be monitored and reviewed and the schedule of exercises modified as required. Completed homework is brought to each session for review and feedback is provided.
The hours for the sessions are:
Session 1> 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Session 2> 11:20 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.
Session 3> 12:40 p.m. to 1:40 p.m.
Once a student has registered for a specific Saturday time slot, this is their time slot throughout the school year. In order to maintain a balanced teacher-student ratio per session, students must attend only the sessions for which they are registered. We are unable to accommodate drop-ins or unscheduled sessions.
The Motor Symbol Sequencing Program is offered over 20 sessions (2 sessions per month) starting the beginning of September and ending mid-June of each year. If you believe that your child may benefit from the Motor Symbol Sequencing program, please contact our Admissions Coordinator at 416 963-4962 who will be pleased to discuss your child’s learning difficulties and whether he or she may be a suitable candidate for this program.
When considering the Tuesday and Thursday Program as well as the Saturday Motor Symbol Sequencing Program keep in mind that a Full Time Program allows the individual to address work on multiple areas of learning difficulty at once. This also means that students and parents considering a Part Time Program must have realistic expectations with regards to the rate of improvement. Without addressing multiple areas simultaneously certain tasks and skills may continue to prove challenging and additional resource support may continue to be required over a longer period of time.
